Edward J. Sopinski, Sr., 87, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday morning, April 21, 2005, at Union Hospital.Born on November 17, 1918, in New Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Vincent and Catherine (Tylka) Sopinski, and was a 1937 graduate of New Philadelphia High School.Edward served as Platoon Sergeant with the United States Army during World War II, and was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the Victory Medal World War II prior to his honorable discharge.On August 6, 1943, in Orlando, Florida, he married the former Donna A. Faniola, who survives.After the war, he was employed by the former Warner & Swasey Company, retiring in 1979.Edward was a member of the Central Catholic Booster Club since its inception, the Amvets, the New Philadelphia VFW, and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying bowling, fishing, and golfing.He is survived by his wife, his son, Edward J., Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Carol Ann; and two sisters.Private memorial and graveside services will be conducted through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia.Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 139 Third Street NE, New Philadelphia, Ohio. 44663.
