Edna M. Barnes

Edna M. Barnes, 89 of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, July 28, 2023.

Born in Layland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Earl L. and Alma A. (Fry) Young and was a graduate of Killbuck High School. Following high school, Edna attended Massillon City School of Nursing and upon graduation, she began her career as a Registered Nurse. Edna worked at Union Hospital at Dover, and also for the medical practices of Dr. Blair Holder and the late Dr. James Zeller. She also served as a volunteer for Community Hospice for over 10 years.

A longtime member of the First Baptist Church at New Philadelphia, Edna served in numerous church activities that included children’s ministry, volunteer in the bookstore, and several missions trips to various foreign countries. She was also an active member of the “JOY” class.

On November 24, 1954, Edna married Forest W. Barnes and together they shared over 66 years of marriage until his passing in January of 2020.  Surviving are three daughters, Sandra Barnes of Bolivar, F. Colleen (Damon) Johnson of New Philadelphia and Joyce Morrell of New Philadelphia; a sister, Marilyn Lint of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Kyle (Nikki) Johnson and Laura (Maddy) Azzardi and five great grandchildren.

 In addition to her parents and her husband, Edna was also preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Morrell, two sisters and a brother.

A service celebrating Edna’s life will be held on Wednesday,  August 2, 2023 beginning at 11 AM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover with Pastor Todd Gopp officiating. Friends are invited to call Wednesday from 10 to 11 AM in the funeral center. A private burial for Edna will take place alongside her husband at a later date.
