Earl M. Kaylor, age 84, of New Philadelphia, died Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2008, in Union Hospital at Dover. He had been an active resident of Hennis Care Centre since February.The son of the late Ross and Byrdetta (Heidy) Kaylor, Earl was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio on December 11, 1923.Following high school, Earl entered into the United States Navy were he served aboard the USS Augusta, a ship widely know throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean for its use by radio reporters and her service as a presidential flagship, having carried both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman under wartime conditions.On October 7, 1944, Earl married his high school sweetheart, the former Leatha Stillwell. The couple recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.For many years, Earl owned and operated the former Kaylor Refrigeration, Inc., a company in which he and his father had been partners.Mr. Kaylor was a longstanding member of the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia where he served many years as an Elder and enjoyed singing in the choir. Earl also shared his passion for music with others as a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Earl was a longtime member of the local chapter known as The Schoenbrunn Valley Barbershop Chorus as well as a member of the barbershop quartet, the Apple Dandies, which competed in state-level contests.Additionally, Earl was a longtime member of the New Philadelphia Masonic Lodge 177.Some may remember Earl as he and Leatha pedaled throughout New Philadelphia on a bicycle built for two. Earl liked working on jigsaw puzzles, playing a game of cribbage or poker with friends and family, out working in his yard, or watching sports on television.In addition to Leatha, Earl leaves behind a daughter, Lyn Emerson of Wooster, Ohio; a son, Dave (Debbie) Kaylor of Denver, Colorado; and a sister, Coralene (Gene) Wardle, of Tucson, Arizona.Two grandchildren, Casey (Kristin) Emerson of Durham, North Carolina and Keeley Emerson, of Denver, Colorado, who complete the family, will miss their grandfather deeply but are grateful for the times and memories they were able to share.Friends are invited to share in a time of visitation on Monday, December 1, 2008, from 5:00 â?? 8:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastors Jeff Gerber and Jill Lovett will lead a service celebrating Earl’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.The family requests that memorial contributions in Earl’s name be sent to The Schoenbrunn Valley Barbershop Chorus, % John Murphy, 240 North Broadway, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
