Earl Eugene Paulus, age 83, of New Philadelphia, died early Friday morning, October 30, 2009, with his family at his side.A son of the late Clyde and Esther (Hefling) Paulus, Earl was born at New Philadelphia, Ohio on May 23, 1926.Earl graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1944 and soon after entered into the United States Navy where he would serve aboard a number of vessels prior to his discharge in 1946.Once he returned home, Earl would reconnect with a grade school classmate, the former Dorothy Thomas. The couple wed on September 14, 1947, and together would rear four children.For nearly twenty years Earl owned and operated the Paulus Turkey Farm. He was also actively involved with the former Tuscarawas-Warwick Schools where for a period of time he served as a member of the school board and would also spend a good number of years as a bus driver for the school system. For more than thirty years Earl was employed by the Tuscarawas County Health Department where he would retire as the Director of Environmental Health in 1994.Earl was a longtime member of the Sharon Moravian Church. He was a member of the Board of Trustees and also served as Diener. Earl was also an active member of the Sharon Dart Ball Team. In addition to his activities within the church, Earl was a lifetime member of the New Philadelphia Elks, B.P.O.E. 510 and the Tuscarawas VFW. Earl also held affiliations with the Nineveh Grange, the Tusco Traveliers, and the Good Sam RV Club.During his free time, Earl enjoyed woodworking, fishing and spending time enjoying nature but especially looked forward to the time he would spend with his children and grandchildren.Earl leaves behind his family that includes his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Gail (Carl) Dufford of Johnstown, Ohio and Leslie (Charles) Teter of Washington Court House, Ohio; and two sisters, Wilma (Robert) Perry of North Canton and Milly Sudduth of Dover.Six grandchildren, Joshua (Jennifer) Dufford, Carrie Dufford, Andrew Dufford, Aaron (Kate) Teter, Paul (Christy) Teter, and Seth (Lyndsey) Teter; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Melia, Benjamin Teter and Owen Teter complete the family.In addition to his parents, Earl is preceded in death by two children, Joan Paulus and Gary Paulus as well as a brother-in-law, Dean Sudduth.The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 1, 2009, from 2:00 Â? 5:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. The New Philadelphia Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. will conduct a Lodge of Sorrow in the funeral home at 5:00 PM on Sunday. Reverend Margaret Leinbach, will lead a service celebrating Earl’s life in Sharon Moravian Church on Monday, November 2, 2009, at 11:00 AM. Burial with military honors will follow in the Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery.Following services, the family will return to the church social hall where a meal and fellowship will be shared.The family requests that memorial contributions in Earl’s name be directed to Sharon Moravian Church, P.O. Box 385, Tuscarawas, Ohio 44682.
