Earl E. Lorenz, of New Philadelphia, celebrated his 100th birthday before his death on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at his residence.Born December 30, 1909 in Dover, he was the son of the late William C. Lorenz and Della Emma (Mizer) Lorenz.After attending New Philadelphia High School, and working on the family farm, Earl worked at American Sheet and Tin. He then worked for Buehlers’ First Market and Ladrach’s Paint Store in New Philadelphia. He then joined the military where he honorably served as a specialist (G) Aerial Gunnery First Class during World War II in the Navy. He returned to Ladrach’s in New Phila. and then Dover after the war. He retired as a bridge inspector from the Ohio Department of Transportation in 1975. From there, he worked part time for Tuscarawas County YMCA for 10 years. Earl was a member of the Dover V.F.W., the National Rifle Association, and the Tusco Rifle Club. Earl is survived by his wife, the former June I. Anderson; his son, Tom (Paula) Lorenz of Dover; his step-son, Larry (Arlene) Fontana of New Philadelphia; his step-daughter, Inez (John) Durbin of California; his grandchildren, Samuel Lorenz of Dover, Travis (Tracy) Smith of Zoarville, Alanna (Eric) Watts of Kent, Rick A. (Debbie) Fontana of Virginia, Kevin (Darla) Durbin and Kim Durbin, both of California; his granddaughter-in-law, Sandy Fontana of Woodsfield; 11 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his siblings, Frank Lorenz, Irene Dummermuth, and an infant sister; and two grandchildren, Lisa and Douglas Fontana.In keeping with Earl’s wishes, cremation will be conducted through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory. A graveside service will be held in Stone Creek Cemetery at a later date.
