Earl E. “Bud” Kohler, Sr., a lifelong resident of the Wainwright, died peacefully Thursday evening, January 15, 2004 at Park Village in Dover with his family at his side. He was 82.Born in Tuscarawas on August 16, 1921 to the late Charles and Edith Goshorn Kohler, Bud started working at the Wainwright coal mine at age 16. During World War II, he served honorably with the U. S. Army from 1942 until 1945. He married the former Cora L. Bonvechio on October 21, 1954.Bud continued working in the coal mines, including the Midvale mine until its closing in 1972 and Alsco in Gnadenhutten, until his retirement in 1982. Along with Cora, Bud had been a member of the former St. Theresa’s Church in Wainwright and then became a member of Sacred Heart Church in New Philadelphia. He was a member of the Tuscarawas VFW Post where also worked for several years. From the 1950’s through the 1970’s, Bud was actively involved with the Wainwright Class A adult baseball league. He not only played ball and managed, but regularly got the field ready for games, keeping the equipment at his home for safekeeping. Most of all, Bud liked being outdoors, whether hunting and fishing with his sons, or tending to his vegetable garden.Bud is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cora; two sons, Earl “Bud” (Diane) Kohler of New Philadelphia and Jim (Vicki) Grant of Massillon; one daughter, Rosemary Grant Schofield of Deerfield Beach, FL; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Ann Kohler of Frankfurt, IN; and sister-in-law, Vera (Lou) Tornebene of New Philadelphia. Besides his parents, all of his brothers, Kenneth, John, Elmer and Dickie Kohler, preceded Bud in death.There will be no calling hours, but family and friends are invited to the graveside service on Monday, January 19, 2004 at 3:00 PM at Calvary Cemetery in New Philadelphia with Rev.
