Dwight V. Pittis, 76, New Philadelphia, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Canton from complications following open heart surgery.Born at Freeport, Ohio on September 23, 1928, he was a son of the late Robert and Gustava Milleson Pittis. He lived the majority of his life in New Philadelphia.He joined the United States Army in November of 1950 and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was a recipient of the Korean Service Medal with four bronze stars, the UN Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post # 1445 in New Philadelphia. Mr. Pittis began his career at the Freeport Press before working at the Newcomerstown News briefly. In 1953, he embarked on a 38 year career with the Times-Reporter where he worked in the composition room prior to his retirement in 1991.He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Hall Pittis, whom he married March 14, 1953; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey and Deborah Pittis of Bangor, ME; grandchildren, Matthew, Patrick, and Jennifer Pittis of Bangor, ME and Jonalee and Michael Fernatt of Uhrichsville; one great grandson, Braden Michael Fernatt; four sisters, Mary Pittis of Canton, Betty Everhart of Youngstown, Pauline Mallernee of Barnesville and Shirley Bigler of East Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter; Debra Westbrook on April 11, 1999, four brothers, and one sister.Friends are invited to call Sunday, October 3, 2004, from 4 to 7 pm at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia. Graveside services lead by Paul Davidson, will be Monday, October 4, 2004 at 11:30 am at Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia. Military services will be conducted by his comrades from the New Philadelphia VFW Honor Squad. Following the committal service, a reception for family and friends will be held in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home.The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
