Dr. Maureen May

March 22, 1956 — March 31, 2017

Dr. Maureen A. May, M.D., 61, of New Philadelphia died unexpectedly, Friday evening, March 31, 2017 in Union Hospital at Dover.

Born in Buffalo, NY on March 22, 1956, Maureen was the daughter of Robert J. May of New Philadelphia and the late Maude Betts May.

Maureen was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in Buffalo and completed her undergraduate degree at the University of New Orleans. She furthered her education at the University of Florida where she earned a degree in Pharmacy and finished her M.D. at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo.

Dr. May completed her Ophthalmology Residency at the Cleveland Clinic and was proud to have been named The Clinic’s first female Chief Resident of Ophthalmology. She accepted her first physician’s position at Holzer Medial Center at Gallipolis, Ohio in 1986 and served there until relocating to the Tuscarawas Valley in 1989. Together with Dr. Daniel J. Clemens, M.D. they formed the Tuscarawas Eye Centre, Inc. and built a successful practice as eye surgeons.

Maureen was a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Dover and for the past decade has served on the New Philadelphia Board of Health. Maureen showed unconditional love toward others; often going out of her way to help those less fortunate or lending a hand to a friend or family member in need.

Maureen loved bird watching and cooking, but above all else, vacationing with her family. She enjoyed spending time researching unique destinations and restaurants for each of their journeys. Her favorite vacation spots included an annual visit to the Outer Banks and traveling to St. John or Cabo San Lucas. Along with each trip, Maureen loved taking pictures of the scenery or events happening around her.

In addition to her father, Maureen will be missed by her husband of 33 years, Patrick J. Robie; her children, Caitlin (husband, Tyler Sekerak) Robie of Cincinnati, Ryan P. Robie of New Philadelphia and PVT. Timothy P. Robie, US Army, who is currently serving at Ft. Benning, GA; her brother, Robert J. (Cathy) May, Jr. of Ashville, NC and many extended family members, friends, and co-workers.

The family will greet guests on Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 1-3 and 6-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where a Christian wake service will begin at 5:45 PM. Fr. Jimmy Hatfield will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, April 7 at 11 AM in St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at Dover. Following services, a light reception will be shared in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover.
