Dr. James Zeller

January 27, 1923 — March 2, 2017

Dr. James F. Zeller, 94, of New Philadelphia, passed away in the Community Hospice Truman House Thursday afternoon, March 2, 2017.

Born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio on January 27, 1923, he was the son of the late Joseph and Nina (Jacobs) Zeller. He spent his early life in Kent, Ohio where he graduated from Kent-Roosevelt High School.

Dr. Zeller then enlisted in the United States Army Air Force, ultimately receiving his wings. While stationed at Tyndall Field, he flew bombers for gun training.

While furthering his education at the University of Buffalo, he met the love of his life, the former Lorraine A. Fox. Dr. Zeller completed his education at the University of Buffalo Medical School obtaining his MD. In 1952, he and Lorraine wed and after completing his residency in Niagara Falls, they ultimately located to the Tuscarawas Valley where he served more than 40 years in the medical profession. The majority of his career was serving as a general surgeon with Union Hospital in Dover.

Dr. Zeller’s love for flying continued after his military service. He was an active aviator at Harry Clever Field. He was also a member of the Ohio National Guard where he served as a flight surgeon, ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

He was a loving supporter of his grandchildren and their activities. Dr. Zeller also enjoyed golfing, fishing, and his membership with the New Philadelphia Rotary Club. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church also.

In addition to his wife, Lorraine, of 64 years, he will be deeply missed by his sons, David (Cathy) Zeller of New Philadelphia and Bill (Nancy) Zeller of Tucson, Arizona; his grandchildren, Christine (Sam) Henry of Midland, Texas, Katie (Jeff) Dietrich of Apex, North Carolina, Kimberly Zeller of Columbus, Andy (Jennifer) Zeller of San Marcos, California, and Sarah (Kevin) Koshko of Scottsdale, Arizona; 6 great-grandchildren; his sister, Rita Sorgenfrei of Maumee, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, William, and Donna Smith.

Private services and inurnment in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed in Dr. Zeller’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.
