Dr. Charles J. “Doc” Miller

Dr. Charles J. Miller Jr., “Doc,” retired radiologist, passed away December 10, 2012 at his home in Bonita Springs, FL. He was born and raised in Tuscarawas County and attended public schools in New Philadelphia, OH. Dr. Miller completed his undergraduate education at Wittenberg College and Adelbert College of Western Reserve University. His graduate education ensued at Western Reserve University Medical School, class of 1945. Dr. Miller’s postgraduate education consisted of radiology residencies at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, CA, and Cincinnati General Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. Dr. Miller served as Captain, MC, AUS, Radiology Division of Brown General Hospital in Dayton, OH for two years and was certified by the American Board of Radiology in 1950.

Dr. Miller’s various professional positions included attending radiologist at Cincinnati General Hospital and Director and Chief of Radiology at Akron General Medical Center from 1953-78. Dr. Miller served as Director of Radiology for St. Thomas Hospital Medical Center in Akron, Ohio from 1979-82. Subsequently, Doc served as attending radiologist at both Wadsworth-Rittman and Lodi Community Hospital in Ohio. He held the rank of Instructor in Radiology at the University of Cincinnati and Clinical Professor of Radiology at the Northeast Ohio Medical University, where Dr. Miller was the initial Director of Undergraduate Radiology.

Dr. Miller proudly served as a member of the Summit County Medical Society, Ohio State Medical Association, American Medical Association, Ohio State Radiological Society, Radiological Society of North America, Eastern Radiological Society, American College of Radiology (Fellow), Northeastern Ohio Radiological Society and Cleveland Radiological Society. He served as President of the Cleveland Radiological Society and the Ohio State Radiological Society, and was Chief of Staff at Akron General Medical Center from 1965-66. In 1989, Doc was awarded the Silver Medal from Ohio State Radiological Society and a “Professor’s Chair” from NEOMED. In 1990, he was honored with the Distinguished Physician’s Society Award from Akron General Medical Center.

Doc’s professional career was guided by the motto of “Excellence in Radiology.” These tenets prevailed for personnel, students at different levels, colleagues and peers. The progress, development, and maturation of the many persons from these different levels attest to the value of his principles. He treasured their accomplishments and their friendships.
Upon retiring to Florida, Dr. Miller enjoyed a simple yet fulfilling life with his beloved wife of 68 years, Marjorie M. Miller. They enjoyed intriguing discussions about current events, brainstorming profound answers to daily crossword puzzles, and sharing grins while reviewing newspaper comics (“the funnies”). Doc treasured quality time spent with family during visits, reminiscing about the past and cherishing the present. Dr. Miller was a member of the Fairlawn United Community Church, a long-time member at Fairlawn County Club in Akron, OH and a charter member of Sharon Golf Club in Sharon Center, OH.

Dr. Miller was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Charles J. Miller of New Philadelphia, OH; son, Curtis W. Miller; sisters, Mary Jo Gullen of San Benito, TX and Geraldine Prescott of Newton Falls, OH; and brother Robert W. Miller of New Philadelphia, OH. Doc is survived by his wife, Marjorie M. Miller; sons Charles J. (Kristine) Miller III of Princeton, NJ, and John R. Miller of Valley City, OH; granddaughter, Ashley M. (Erik) Szyluk, and his 3 great-grandchildren, Ann Elizabeth Szyluk, Erik K. Szyluk Jr and Lucy Mae Szyluk of West Hartford, CT.
