Doyle D. Fisher, age 88, of Dover, died peacefully early Saturday morning, December 6, 2008 in New Dawn Retirement Center. Born at Dennison, Ohio, September 25, 1920, he was a son of the late Oscar and Maude Baker Fisher. He attended school in both Dover and New Philadelphia. On June 13, 1939, he married the former E. Mae Jeffries at Moundsville, West Virginia. Mrs. Fisher passed away just a week prior to their fiftieth wedding anniversary on June 1, 1989.Not long after Doyle was married, World War II began, and he served in the 87th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron of the 7th Armored Division in the United States Army. Doyle was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal, having earned the European African Service Metal with two bronze stars, the good conduct metal and the World War II Victory Medal, while participating in the Battle of St. Vith and the Battle of the Bulge. Many will remember Doyle as a bus driver for the Cities of Dover and New Philadelphia in an era when public transportation was advocated between the cities. He was also affiliated with RHR construction and Ben Cookson Construction before becoming Superintendent of Water Distribution for the City of New Philadelphia, retiring in 1986 with twenty years of service in that capacity. Doyle’s family includes a daughter; Jan D. Shilling and a son; Jerry (wife Julie) Fisher, all of New Philadelphia, and Doyle’s special friend, Lois Carnahan of Dover. He’ll be sadly missed by his five grandchildren; Julie (husband Marion) Troyer of New Philadelphia, Jamie J. Shilling of San Francisco, California, Mark (wife Jenny) Fisher of Bloomington, Indiana, Mike Fisher of New Philadelphia, and Kathy (husband Greg) Shaw of Columbus. Seven great-grandchildren; Tommy Troyer, Michelle Troyer, Mallory Fisher, Marshall Fisher, John Fellure, Nellie Shaw, and Ryan Shaw, and a caregiver, Todd Patterson, complete the family. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Fisher is preceded in death by his son-in-law, John U. Shilling, a sister, Zula Fisher, and his two brothers; Marion and Harold Fisher. Friends are invited to call Monday from 4-7 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. The Rev. Hugh B. Berry will lead Mr. Fisher’s funeral service Tuesday morning at 11AM in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will follow, alongside his wife, in East Avenue Cemetery where military honors will be rendered. Following the committal service, a luncheon will be served in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home.
