Douglas Clayton Platt, 74, of Dennison, died early Saturday, April 28, 2018, in Union Hospital at Dover following a brief illness.
Born at Akron, Ohio on August 13, 1943, Doug was a son of the late Arthur and Lucy Taylor Platt. He was a graduate of Springfield High School at Akron and on May 19, 1968, married the love of his life, the former Angel Brown.
Shortly after their marriage, Doug was involved in an accident at work that resulted in the loss of his arm. However, he overcame the injury and with the use of a prosthetic arm was able to work as a machinist for more than 32 years at the Uhrden Company at Sugarcreek.
Together, Doug and Angel enjoyed traveling extensively, visiting much of the continental US and its outlying islands. As a couple, Doug and Angel were involved with the Roxford Rockets 4-H Club for more than 30 years and were fortunate to make many life-long relationships with those they mentored and help with hundreds of projects. They are also long-time members of the Church of Christ at New Philadelphia. Doug spent 30 years as a member of the Republican Central Committee for Tuscarawas County and had a great love for dogs.
In addition to his wife of nearly 50 years, Doug is survived by two sisters, Jeanette Parks of Akron and Carol Ferrall of San Diego, California, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Platt and Laban Platt, and a sister, Wanda Forsyth.
The family will greet guests on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 from 4-6 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and again on Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 9:30-10:30 AM. Tim Hatfield will lead a service celebrating Doug’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Thursday at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in Roxford Church Cemetery. Following services, all are invited to join in a time of food and fellowship in the social hall of the Church of Christ at New Philadelphia.
Memorial contributions in Doug’s name may be directed to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society, 1432 Tall Timber Rd. NE, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 or to the Church of Christ, 749 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
