Douglas Kennedy McIntire

Longtime New Philadelphia resident, Doug McIntire, 87, of New Philadelphia, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014 in Union Hospital at Dover after battling multiple health setbacks over the past two months. Douglas Kennedy McIntire was born August 9, 1926 at Brilliant, Ohio to the late Albert and Esther (Gillogly) McIntire.

A graduate of Uniontown High School in Pennsylvania, Doug enlisted to serve in World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps serving in Germany during the occupation. While serving in Europe, he enjoyed playing offensive and defensive line for the Tempelhofer Base football team. Doug attended Waynesburg College and pursued a career in journalism that saw him become a sports editor and radio personality. Eventually, Doug pursued a career in sales and then in 1969 he relocated to New Philadelphia and became the first General Manager of Trumpet in the Land. Doug played a leading role in Trumpet’s early stages through fundraising, construction of the amphitheatre and the opening season. After Trumpet, He served in a variety of jobs from insurance, management and supervision to retail. Doug continued to work until his latest illness.

An outstanding role model as a husband and father, Doug enjoyed reading, the theatre which he performed in numerous Little Theatre Productions of the past 40 years. He also enjoyed supporting the pursuits of his children and grandchildren and spending time with his family and companion, Susan. Throughout his life Doug was active in the Presbyterian Church where he lived and served as a Sunday School teacher, Trustee, Elder and Liturgist as well as singing in the choir. A passionate and loving man, Doug will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his sons, Douglas Kent (Peg) McIntire and Scott (Carolyn) McIntire; longtime friend and companion, Susan Worley; grandchildren, Kelly McIntire L’Amoreaux, Michelle (Chris) Williams, Douglas Albert McIntire and Kevin McIntire; three great grandchildren, Michael, Kiera and AJ; a brother, Bill (Effie) McIntire as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charles McIntire, his wife of 48 years, Carolyn (Smith) McIntire and her parents, Robert and Thelma (Conn) Smith.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Doug’s life will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Jaqueline Pinkowski officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service a luncheon will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made in Doug’s memory to the First Presbyterian Church, 217 East High Avenue, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 or to Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County, P.O. Box 53, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
