Dorothy Mae Harman, 101, of Dover, died Monday, June 20, 2011, in Park Village Assisted Living at Dover following a period of declining health.A daughter of the late James and Emma (Ross) Pritchard, Dorothy was born March 3, 1910 at Cambridge, Ohio.As a young girl, Dorothy attended school in a rural one-room school house which she traveled to and from in a horse drawn wagon. Dorothy had a desire to become a teacher and attended Kent State University for one year before completing her bachelor’s degree in education at West Liberty College at Wheeling, West Virginia. Dorothy then earned her master’s degree at Buffalo State Teachers College at Buffalo, New York. Dorothy started her teaching career at Dover City Schools in 1929 and would continue her career at both the elementary and college level at Columbus, Ohio, Wheeling, West Virginia and Buffalo, New York.In June of 1938, Dorothy married the love of her life, Dr. Frank K. Harman and together the couple raised one son, Richard L. Harman. Dorothy and Frank shared 53 years of marriage prior to Frank’s passing in November of 1991.Dorothy greatly enjoyed her teaching experiences and after retiring, she enjoyed traveling internationally with Frank. The couple even traveled around the world three times. She was a member of Kenmore United Methodist Church at Kenmore, New York.She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Carol Harman of Dover; two granddaughters, Karen (Daniel) Cialone of Eden, New York and Kathleen (Daniel) Blair of Dover and three great grandchildren, Hannah and Alexander Cialone and Danielle Blair.Completing the family are two brothers, H. Rex Pritchard and H. Max Pritchard both of Dover; a niece, Susan Pritchard of Dover and three nephews, James Pritchard of Canton, Donald Pritchard of North Olmstead, Ohio and Terry Rex Pritchard of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Donald and Gilbert Pritchard.The family will receive friends on Friday, June 24, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. A service celebrating Dorothy’s life will follow in the funeral home at 4 p.m. with Rev. Stephen L. Patrick officiating. A reception will follow in the Hospitality Room at the funeral home.
