Dorothy Lucille Benjamin, 81, of New Philadelphia, died Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Union Hospital in Dover.A daughter of the late Harry B. and Elizabeth (Graham) Cheney, Dorothy was born February 16, 1924 in Phoenix, Arizona.She was a 1941 graduate of New Philadelphia High School. Upon graduation from high school, Dorothy attended Mt. Union College for one year and then graduated from nursing school at the former Mercy Hospital in Canton, Ohio. Dorothy then enlisted with the Cadet Nurses Corps during World War II. Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in New Philadelphia and having been a member of the church since 1940. She was the Treasurer for the New Philadelphia High School Class of 1941 and she enjoyed gathering with the class for luncheons.She is survived by her son, Robert L. Benjamin, of Pompano Beach, Florida; sister, Helen Sturtz of New Philadelphia; nephew, Daniel Sturtz of San Diego, California; and one brother-in-law, John (Clemetine) Benjamin of New Philadelphia.Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Benjamin, whom she married December 29, 1949 in Akron, Ohio. Leo died March 27, 1991.There will be no public visitation observed. A service celebrating Dorothy’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia with Rev. Michael Seely officiating. Burial will take place in East Avenue Cemetery in New Philadelphia. A luncheon will then be held in the Geib Family Center in New Philadelphia following the services.Memorial contributions may be made to the Leo Benjamin Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Quaker Club, Attn: Tom Farbizo, 343 Ray Avenue NW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 or to a charity of one’s choice.
