Dorothy Lirgg, age 91, of New Philadelphia died peacefully early Friday morning, January 4, 2013 in Country Club Retirement Center at Dover following a period of declining health.
A daughter of the late Albert and Gladys (Bretzius) Hahn, Dorothy was born at Baltic, Ohio on August 3, 1921.
She was a graduate of Baltic High School and following high school attended the Beckwith Business School. Early in her professional career, Dorothy worked for Hardesty at Dover, did bookwork for O.H. Auer and later served as a clerk of the Northern and Southern District Courts at Tuscarawas County. Additionally, she worked as the secretary for former New Philadelphia Mayor Joe Pritz during his tenure in office.
On May 22, 1948, Dorothy married the love of her life, Dale F. Lirgg and as a couple had two children. Together, they celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to Dale’s death on July 23, 2008.
She is a long-time member of the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia. Dorothy and Dale loved to travel having toured most of the 48 continental United States often visiting family and friends along the way. She also enjoyed playing cards and dominos, cheering on the Ohio sports teams, attending Cleveland Indians games and spending time with her grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by a son, Jeffrey (Ann) Lirgg of Louisville, Ohio; a daughter, Cathy D. Lirgg of Fayetteville, Arkansas; four grandsons, Jason, Jeremy, Joseph and Scott Lirgg and three great grandchildren, Devin, Carter and Alyssa Lirgg. Numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
In addition to her parents, and husband Dorothy was preceded in death by four sisters, Harriett, Winifred, Martha, and Pauline and four brothers, Albert “Pete”, Wallace, Phillip, and William.
The family will receive guests on Sunday, January 6, 2013 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastors Jeffrey Gerber and Jill Lovett will lead a celebration of Dorothy’s life on Monday, January 7, 2013 at 1:00 PM in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial alongside her husband will follow in the West Lawn Cemetery at Baltic.
