Dorothy Lee “Dottie” Mason, age 74, of New Philadelphia, went to be home with the Lord, late Friday evening, August 31, 2007 in Union Hospital at Dover, where she was surrounded by her family. Born at Dover, July 3, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Michele and Elizabeth L. D’Agnone Donato, and was a 1951 graduate of Dover High School. Dorothy was a familiar face to many in the community who will remember her friendly smile from her days as a cashier at the former Quick Chek’s of Dover and New Philadelphia, the former Rink’s and Nichols Department Stores respectively. Early in her life, she worked at Snyder Manufacturing. Better known as Dottie to her family and friends, she was a member of the former New Philadelphia Eagles, moving her membership to Dover when the New Philadelphia Lodge closed, was a member of the Roswell Keeping In Touch Seniors. She made many memories playing Bingo, and taking bus trips to Atlantic City. Talented with her hands, Dottie enjoyed sewing and crocheting, working word puzzles, crafting and painting ceramics, and bowling with her friends. Previously, she had attended a Bible study at New Life Church of God. Her family includes two daughters, Patti Bigler of New Philadelphia, and Peggi VanWinkle (companion Zeriah Crotteau) also of New Philadelphia, a step-daughter, Kathy Hootman of Coshocton, a step-son Jim (Jan) Mason of Cambridge, four grandchildren; Terry (Christine) Bigler of Ashley, Ohio, Lenny (Tina) Bigler of Alexandria, Kentucky, Christopher (Chasity) McNutt of Uhrichsville, and Derek “D.J.” (Terra) VanWinkle, of Winter Garden, Florida, four step-grandchildren; Shawnette, T.J. and Andy Hootman and Lexi Mason. She’ll be sadly missed by her great-grandchildren Â? Jaimeson Bigler, Cody Mitchell, Kristen Mitchell, Chale McNutt, Brianna McNutt, Santana Lillie, Breanna Lillie, Katlyn Lillie, and Amyah VanWinkle, a mother-in-law, Mildred Mason of Dover, and her brother-in-law, Glen (Lois) Mason of Dover. A brother, Raymond (Marguerite) Donato of Strasburg, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins complete the family. Dottie is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde A. Mason, who died in 1991. Two brothers, Anthony and Robert Donato, a great-grandson, Skylor McNutt, and pet dogs Snoopy and Kente, are also deceased. Friends are invited to call Sunday (TODAY) from 2-4 and from 6-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia, where Pastor Urie Hershberger will lead the Mason funeral Monday morning at 10:30 in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will follow in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover. A reception for family and friends will be held in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home at New Philadelphia, following the committal service.
