Dorothy Heil, 86, of New Philadelphia, died Saturday, September 18, at Union Hospital following a short illness. A daughter of the late Oscar and Ethel (Blackwell) O’Donnell, Dorothy was born November 12, 1922 at Dennison, Ohio.Dorothy graduated from Dennison High School and earned an education degree from Ohio University. She was a Special Education teacher and homemaker who enjoyed time spent with children as a Girl and Boy Scout leader, and a Bible and Sunday School Instructor. She was a supporter of various youth activities at the Tuscarawas County YMCA, Boy Scouts of America, and youth baseball. Dorothy was an avid supporter of the sports programs and academic activities of her grandchildren. She was an honorary member of College Club, participated in the Union Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the New Philadelphia Women’s Club and a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church. Dorothy volunteered in many church activities and was ordained as an Elder. She enjoyed the friendships gained and maintained over the years while playing bridge and other games. A golf enthusiast, Dorothy recorded three holes in one!Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Edward, who passed away in 2009, her son Thomas, sister Betty (O’Donnell) Stone, and her parents. She is survived by her brother, Richard O’Donnell of Wheeling, W.V., two children, Ann (Mike) Heil Patterson of Lake Forest, Illinois and Mark (Irene) Heil of Dover; five grandchildren, Kathryn and Molly Patterson both of Lake Forest, Illinois, Michelle (Wade) Harrison of Greenville, Ohio, Scott (Kara) Heil of New Philadelphia and John Heil of Denver, Colorado, two great granddaughters, Kayla Harrison and Adelyn Heil, a great grandson, Jakob Harrison; and a niece, Susan (Rodney) Willard of Dennison.The family will receive guests on Tuesday, September 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A Memorial Service will be celebrated by Pastor Richard Greenwood on Wednesday, September 22 at 10:30 at the First Presbyterian Church in New Philadelphia. Following the memorial service, a luncheon will be held in the Geib Family Center in New Philadelphia.Those wishing to do so may send the family a personal condolence and view an online memorial by visiting the funeral home website.Contributions may be made in Dorothy’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
