Dorothy Joanne Hewitt, 92, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, February, 20, 2024, in New Dawn Retirement Center at Dover.  

A daughter of the late Roger and Bertha M. Smith Crites, Dorothy was born in Tuscarawas on August 7, 1931.  

Dorothy was a graduate of the former Tuscarawas-Warwick High School and continued her formal education at Kent State Tuscarawas. 

On April 18, 1954, Dorothy married William “Bill” Hewitt, together the couple raised three children and shared in 55 years of marriage prior to Bill’s passing on September 15, 2009. During their marriage, Dorothy and Bill shared many travel adventures including a special 25th Anniversary trip to St. Thomas Island and countless home improvement projects throughout the years.  

Dorothy was a longtime member of Sharon Moravian Church where she enjoyed singing in the church choir. She also enjoyed caring for her family, crocheting, and listening to Big Band music.  

At a young age, Dorothy began her career in government as a postal worker. She later held a position with the former Joy Manufacturing, where she would ultimately meet her future husband. After their marriage, Dorothy returned to her work in the public sector and retire from the Social Security Office at New Philadelphia after more than 30 years of service. She was proud to have received a commendation from the President upon her retirement. 

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Hewitt and a son, Richard Hewitt both of New Philadelphia; two granddaughters, Charity McGraw and Rebecca McGraw; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lila West and Carol Beck as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Bonita Hewitt, and siblings, Warren Crites, Claude Crites, and Virginia Hiller. 

Dorothy’s cremation care has been handled by the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A private graveside service will take place in the Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery.
