Dorothy V. Burkholder, 93, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, January 4, 2024, in Community Hospice Truman House at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.
A daughter of the late George and Agnes (Moliski) Pringle, Dorothy was born April 18, 1930, at Dover, Ohio.
On May 29, 1947, Dorothy married the love of her life, Walter Burkholder and together they enjoyed 65 years of marriage before his passing in August of 2012.
She was an active member of Otterbein United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia for 79 years where she served as a custodian and was a member of the Otterbein Woman of Faith.
Dorothy was a homemaker most of her life, but also worked for New Philadelphia Schools in the cafeteria, Williams Furniture; and the former Daniel’s Gift Shop. She loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother & great-great-grandmother. Dorothy was a cleaning machine. She spent many hours with the grandkids and loved making her special Christmas cookies for them to fight over as to who would get them first from grandma. She was still able to help make them this past Christmas
Dorothy is survived by her children, Dale (Lori) Burkholder of Dennison and Vickie (Dale) Swaldo of Stone Creek; grandchildren, Jennifer Gardner of New Philadelphia, Julie (Eric) Swartz of Dennison, Philip (Sarah) Burkholder of New Philadelphia, Scott (Jen) Swaldo and Zachary (McKenzie) Swaldo both of Stone Creek; eight great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and sister, Kay Deibel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; parents and seven brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 7, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home and Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Dorothy’s life will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Jon Long officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.
Dorothy’s family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Inn of Northwood and Community Hospice for their outstanding care.
