Dorothy Alice Lewis, 96, a longtime resident of New Philadelphia, died peacefully in her residence early Tuesday morning, May 18, 2004. Born in Cleveland, OH, on June 21, 1907, she was a daughter of the late William C. and Marion Smith Davis. As a young lady, Dorothy was an athlete who enjoyed playing tennis and basketball. Even into her later years, she would impress her family by turning cartwheels and tumbling through her home. On August 9, 1930, she married Wilbur A. “Toddy” Lewis. The couple spent more than sixty-two years together before his death on June 2, 1993. Dorothy is best known as the founding hostess of the local Welcome Wagon. She enjoyed acquainting new residents to the Tuscarawas Valley for more than a decade. She also enjoyed playing bridge, cooking for her family, and was an especially gifted caregiver for many of her family members. Survivors include three daughters; Carol (Jerry) Wampfler, of New Philadelphia, Linda Laghetto of Dover, Jean “Jim” Nieciak of Darien, IL, and a son; David Lewis of New Philadelphia. Eleven grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren complete the family. In addition to her husband and parents, a brother, Myron A. Davis, preceded Mrs. Lewis in death. Friends are invited to call Friday afternoon from 4 until 6 PM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia. The Rev. Glen Shedlock will officiate funeral services Saturday afternoon at 1 PM in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial, alongside her husband, will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. In gratitude for their exemplary care, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622.
