Doris Polka

Doris Polka, 96, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, December 7, 2014 in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.

A daughter of the late John and Cora (Blind) Harmon, Doris was born April 21, 1918 at Dover, Ohio.

Doris graduated from Dover High School then on January 17, 1936, she married Julius “Jiggs” Polka and together they raised two daughters, DeAnna and Jill. The couple shared 54 years of marriage prior to Jiggs’ passing in August 1990.

She was formerly employed at Jack & Jill Children’s Clothing Store and Art’s Jewelers at Monroe Mall and New Towne Mall retiring after 26 years of service. Doris is a former member of the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia.

She is survived by her daughters, DeAnna (David) Massarelli of Lakeland, Florida and Jill Davis of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, John (Kelly) Massarelli, Vic (Tara) Massarelli, Dan (Heather) Massarelli, Robin Furbay and Jim (Lisa) Davis; great grandchildren, Noel, Nicholas, Isabella, Julianna and Leonardo Massarelli, Brandon Furbay and Adam and Allie Davis..

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Delores Jean Polka and two brothers, Linus and Paul.

In keeping with Doris’ wishes, private services will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with interment following in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
