Doris Jean West, age 87, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully Easter Sunday afternoon, March 31, 2013, in New Dawn Health Care Center at Dover.
Born at New Philadelphia, October 11, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Hershell H. and Frances M. Price McMerrell.
Doris attended New Philadelphia High School and was a member of the First Church of the Brethren.
On February 12, 1944, she married Clarence E. West and the couple observed fifty-one years of marriage prior to his death August 28, 1995.
Together they reared a family that includes daughters Linda Martin of Malvern, and Diana (Charles II) Strader of Oneida.
She’ll be sadly missed by six grandchildren; Darla West of New Philadelphia, Charles Strader III of Arizona, Robin Strader of Canton, Gen Strader of New Philadelphia, Tim (Christine) Martin of Canton, and Ron (Debbie) Martin of Big Prairie, Ohio.
Survivors also include her great-grandchildren; Courtney Darryl and Savannah Martin, Justin, Dana and Brandon Martin, River Eick, Charles IV and Dakota Strader and Trinity Glazer. A nephew, Guy Berndt of Canton completes the family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Doris is preceded in death by her sisters Genevie Berndt and Eileen Osgood, a son-in-law, Ronald Martin, and a great-grandchild, David Martin.
Doris will be remembered for her genuine care and concern for others, she regularly put the needs of her family and friends before her own. She enjoyed listening to music, and made many fond memories with her family and friends spending the summers camping at Whispering Falls outside of Warsaw.
Cremation is planned, and her family will gather Friday, April 5 at 10:30 in Evergreen Burial Park where Pastor Max Canfield will lead graveside committal service. Following the committal service, family and friends will gather in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the New Philadelphia funeral home. There are no public calling hours.
