Donald L. Wemple

Donald L. Wemple, of New Philadelphia, passed away on his 84th birthday, January 20, 2025. He was under the care of Hennis Care Centre of Dover and Traditions Health Hospice of New Philadelphia, following a period of declining health.

Born in New Philadelphia on January 20, 1941, Don was the son of the late Erma and Louis Lesjak and was a 1958 graduate of New Philadelphia High School. He also was a member of the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Lewis Washington. He and his wife are members of Sacred Heart Church. Due to suffering from multiple sclerosis, Don was forced to retire as a craneman from Empire Detroit Steel (Reeves) in Dover.

On August 30, 1969, Don married the former Frances “Fran” Fantine of Midvale. They celebrated more than 55 years of marriage prior to his passing.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kim (Tim) Martin of Strasburg; his granddaughter, Olivia Martin; and his grandson, Nick Martin; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim (Laurel) Wemple of Dover, Jeff (Linda) Lesjak of New Philadelphia, and Rod (Debra) Lesjak of New Philadelphia.

Predeceasing Don was his mother-in-law, Ruth Fantine of Midvale; and his brother-in-law, Fred Fantine of New Philadelphia.

Besides Don and his wife being landlords until Don’s health forced his retirement, Don was a collector of many things and could be found at many local garage sales, auctions, and flea markets. One of his most enjoyable moments was the day his 1963 Mercury Comet won the “Best in Show” award at the First Annual Cruise-in at the Shady Rest Army/Navy Garrison in Beach City.

In keeping with Don’s wishes, cremation care will be provided by the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Father Jeff Coning will officiate a memorial service in the Funeral Home chapel at New Philadelphia on Sunday, January 26, 2025 beginning at 2 PM. The family will receive friends from 1 PM and until the time of his service.
