Donald V. Slemmer, age 83, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in his home, Thursday, July 12, with his family at his side.
Born at Strasburg, December 3, 1928, he was a son of the late Roscoe R. and Lucille A. Bone Slemmer.
Best known by his family and friends as Don, he graduated from Strasburg High school before entering the United States Army where he served honorably during the Korean Conflict.
He returned to the Tuscarawas Valley in the spring of 1953, and within a year, had met and fallen in love with the former Gladys M. Smart. The couple wed October 23, 1954.
Don worked throughout his life to support his family, including time as a bulldozer operator, and worked in the Coal Industry for Horizon Coal.
His memberships included the Salvation Army at Dover, and the former Church of the Living God.
He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing, for his pleasant and friendly disposition, for always greeting friends and strangers alike with a smile, for listening to his polka music, and watching Westerns on the television.
Survivors include his sons and daughter, Paul D. (wife, Cynthia) Slemmer of New Philadelphia, Cindy (husband, Daniel) Barker of New Philadelphia, and Randy (wife, Stephanie) Slemmer, of Newcomerstown.
Ten grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren also survive.
Two sisters, Betty Lash and Elaine Hershberger, both of Strasburg, complete the family.
In addition to his parents, and wife, Don is preceded in death by his son, Donald E. Slemmer, four brothers; Roscoe, Richard, Gary and John Slemmer, and his sister Christina Ecenbarger.
Friends are invited to call Sunday afternoon from 1-4 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover.
Don’s son, Randy, will officiate his father’s funeral Monday afternoon at 1 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover.
Interment, alongside his wife, will follow at Dover Burial Park with military honors.
