Donald Michael Turnbull

Donald Michael Turnbull, 81, of Hennis Care Centre in Dover and formerly of Midland, Michigan, died Monday, October 24, 2005 at Hennis Care Centre.A son of the late William and Eleanor (Dignum) Turnbull, Donald was born January 7, 1924 in Toronto, Canada.He served as a single engine pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and then in 1949, he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto. Don then came to the United States in 1960 with his family.Don served as the chairman of the Tuscarawas County Chapter of the American Red Cross and also as president of the Tuscarawas County Chapter of the United Way. Also, he was a member of MENSA.Don will be remembered by his family as a true perfectionist and also as an outstanding public speaker. He loved brainteasers and reading. And, although he couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket, he could play the piano with amazing flair.He considered himself socially clumsy and uncomfortable and yet those who knew him experienced his genuine warmth and compassion. Don was a generous man who put much energy into maintaining friendships through the years. A good man, a great father, a loving husband, he will be sadly missed.He is survived by his children, Stephanie J. Wills of New Philadelphia, Ohio, Robin E. Doll of Pennsylvania and Heather D. Miller of Colorado; six grandchildren; one brother, Andrew G. Turnbull of Toronto, Canada; and his spouse Lillian (Hodges) Turnbull of Midland, Michigan.Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his precious wife of 50 years, Betty E. Turnbull, who died July 15, 1996.In keeping with Don’s wishes, there will be no services held and cremation will take place at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia with inurnment being held in Midland City Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made in Don’s name to the United Way of Tuscarawas County, 1458 Fifth Street NW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 and/or the American Red Cross, 113 West High Avenue, New Philadelphia, OH 44663 and/or the Tuscarawas County YMCA, 600 Monroe, Dover, OH 44622
