Donald M. Levengood, 84, of New Philadelphia passed away November 27, 2015 following a period of declining health.
Born in Beach City on September 6, 1931, he was the son of the late John F. and Martha (Alenbaugh) Levengood.
After graduating from Dover High School in 1949, Don honorably served his country in the United States Air Force where he was discharged as an Airman 1st Class. While in the service, he was trained as a mechanic working on the B-36 bomber. The knowledge he gained in the service assisted him throughout his professional career.
On Christmas Eve of 1954, Don married his loving wife of nearly 61 years, Marjorie Mae Carlisle. After their marriage, Don worked as an electrician wiring Goodyear Blimps in Akron, OH, then returning to local area he worked in several occupations but most notable were his time in the coal strip mines, and with General Electric before Don and his wife, both union carpenters, worked side by side to earn enough money to start their own business. It was their dream to build a sustainable business in oil and gas field that would take care of his wife and children. Don was instrumental in founding Levengood Well Services, Atwood Resources and Atwood Enterprises. He was honored in 2010 by the Ohio Oil & Gas Association where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was also a longtime member of the NRA.
While Don’s professional life was a way to make a living on earth, Don’s heart was meant for service of the Lord. His passion and life’s calling was to share the Gospel with others. Don served as an elder and pastor for numerous years at the Church of Jesus Christ Dover Restoration Branch. He ministered throughout the United States as well as locally. His travels with his wife were nearly always faith-related, and he especially treasured his vacation to the holy land (Israel) in 1980.
Don will be deeply missed by his wife, Marjorie, of New Philadelphia; his sons, John (Pam) Levengood of Hartville, Bruce (Annette) Levengood and Tim (Cathy) Levengood, both of Dover, Ted (Shelly) Levengood of New Cumberland, Brian (Annette) Levengood of Bolivar, and Kreg (Tracy) Levengood of Grain Valley, MO; his daughter, Sue (Steve) Levengood-Young of Westfield Center; his sister, Marna Jones of Mineral City; and his sisters-in-law, Louise Levengood of New Cumberland and Lois Miller of Dover; 21 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Galen, Dean, and Gary.
Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. A service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. with Elders Sam Oliver and William Johnston officiating.
