Donald L. Conkey

DONALD L. CONKEY, 68, of New Philadelphia, passed away Friday, August 1, 2003 at Union Hospital after a courageous six-month battle with cancer. A funeral service and burial have taken place in Rogersville, PA earlier this month.He was born in Franklin Township, Greene County, PA, a sone of the late John H. and Pearl Breese Conkey. In 1952, he graduated from Center Township High School. Donald served honorably with with the U.S. Army Reserve from 1957 to 1963. Following his service to our country, he worked 28 years for GTE, from which he retired, doing various jobs from Lineman to Supervisor.Donald was a member of the New Philadelphia branches of the Moose, Eagles, VFW and AMVETS. He was also a member for several years of the Tusco Rifle Club in Midvale. Donald was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and gardening. He greatly enjoyed sitting on his front porch visiting with friends, family and his grandchildren.Don is survived by his son, Andrew (Heather) Conkey of Port Washington; his daughter, Jane (Keith) Beahm of New Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Kyle, Kourtney and Keri Beahm; his companion of 22 years, Linda Reiger; four sisters, Clara (Jim) Iams, Sue (Roy) Clutter, and Naomi (Phil) Lapping, all of Sycamore, PA, Betty (Vernon) Scherich of New Philadelphia and his twin sister, Ferne (Wayne) Knight of Carmichaels, PA; and his former wife, Linda Headley Conkey, of Windridge, PA. Don was preceded in death by his parents, John & and Pearl Breese and his infant sister, Kathryn Jane Conkey.Family and friends are warmly invited to gather for an informal celebration of Don’s life on Thursday evening, August 28, 2003 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home.
