Donald H. Mowls, age 92, of New Philadelphia and formerly of Uhrichsville, died Monday, May 10, 2010, in Union Hospital at Dover following a period of declining health.A son of the late Joe and Hazel (Grund) Mowls, Don was born at New Cumberland on February 12, 1918.He was a member of the United States Army during World War II where he was on the front lines during the Battle of the Bulge and was an artillery operator handling mortar rounds.Following his discharge, Don would spend thirty years as a mechanic for the former Midvale Mine and would go on to work for Joy Manufacturing at New Philadelphia and the Tuscarawas County Engineer where he also served as a mechanic.Don was an avid fan of racing and was a familiar face at Midvale Speedway for many years and was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed bowling.Don was a longtime member of Broadway United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia and also attended First Church of the Brethren at New Philadelphia. Additionally, Don was Life Member of the Midvale VFW having been actively involved with the organization on both the local and regional levels as well as a member of the United Mine Workers Union.Don is survived by a daughter, Twyla (Bill) McCartney and a son, Dean Mowls as well his lifelong friend and fiancée, Mary Dennis West; a brother, Joe (Adeline) Mowls and a sister Jean Rothacher all of New Philadelphia.Two grandchildren, Max McCartney of New Philadelphia and Sarah (Phil) Burkholder of Brunswick as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-five years, Ruth Mowls; two brothers, Lloyd “Red” Mowls and Frank Mowls and a sister, Marjorie Williams.The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 13, 2010, from 4:00 Â? 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastors Bill Sowers and Max Canfield will lead a service celebrating Don’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Friday, May 14, 2010, at 10:30 AM. Burial with military honors provided by Don’s comrades of the Midvale VFW will follow in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.The family requests that memorial contributions in Don’s name be directed to Broadway United Methodist Church, 120 Church Street SE, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663, First Church of the Brethren 700 Fair Ave NW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663, or to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 W Third Street, Dover, Ohio 44622.
