Donald F. Glenn, 82, of Dover, passed away Friday, August 7, 2015 in Aultman Hospital at Canton following a period of declining health.
Born in East Liverpool on July 7, 1933, he was the son of the late Donald W. and Helen Glenn.
After graduating from East Liverpool High School in 1951, Don served his country in the United States Army for 8 years where he was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. He graduated from The Engineer School US Army 17th Engineer Officer basic course and ultimately obtained his degree in architecture from Kent State University in 1957. While in school, he enjoyed working alongside his grandfather in his painting business.
Don’s professional career with MKC in New Philadelphia spanned more than 30 years where he became a partner and ultimately president of the firm in 1983. Prior to his retirement from the firm, he had several notable local designs including: Atwood Lake Lodge, Starlight School, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Chase Bank in Dover to name a few.
Don also was named one of the top three school architects in the state of Ohio during his career. In retirement, he worked for state as a consultant where he evaluated schools and offered his professional opinion about the needs of the facilities.
Locally, Don was instrumental in getting the initial funding and designing the original campus for Kent State Tuscarawas Campus, and saving Tuscora Park from becoming a housing development. He was also a member of numerous groups including the Atwood Yacht Club, the New Philadelphia Rotary Club, and the American Institute of Architects and a former member of Union Country Club and the Jaycees,
On December 8, 1984, Don married his wife, Nancy A. Glenn of Dover.
He will also be missed by his family including his daughters, Linda Glenn of Orville, Lisa Coreen (David) George of Louisville, KY, and Laura Lahmers of New Philadelphia; his step-daughters, Carol Withem and Beth (Tracy) Tedrow, both of New Philadelphia, and Jennifer Robinson, of Port Orange, FL; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; his special caregiver, Penny Landis; and numerous other family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Jean Glenn on July 24, 1983.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. A service celebrating Don’s life will be held in Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Philadelphia on Tuesday beginning at 10:30 am with The Rev. Denny Rohn officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgecrest Memory Garden in Dover.
Friends are invited back to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church fellowship hall following the committal service where the church family will host a luncheon.
