David Allen Wigfield, 70, of New Philadelphia passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family, Sunday, August 20, 2017.
Born in Union Hospital at Dover on April 20, 1947, Dave was a son of the late Robert and Betty Sherer Wigfield.
Dave was a 1965 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and worked for the Timken Roller Bearing Company for 37 years as a tool and die inspector, retiring in 2004.
Dave was a longtime active member of Jerusalem Church, where he sang in the church choir, served as the cemetery sexton, taught Sunday school, was a youth group leader and a member of the Men’s group.
For years, Dave enjoyed riding his bicycle uptown and sitting on the square and watching passersby. He enjoyed playing euchre, reading history and religious books, and spending time on the beach, especially in Hawaii, Florida and at Myrtle Beach.
Dave also loved music of the 1950s having attended numerous concerts of the Van-Dells through the years. He also loved George Jones, the Statler Brothers, and the Beach Boys.
At an early age, while attending a Junior Leader meeting for 4-H, Dave met his future wife, the former Martha Kendle, whom he married on November 8, 1969. Dave would later go on to serve as a 4-H judge for bicycles and model rockets.
Together, in their 47 years of marriage, the couple was blessed with a son, Troy (Christina) Wigfield of New Philadelphia, and two grand-dogs, Lycos and Yoshi. Completing the family are his sister, Connie (Doug) Troyer of New Philadelphia; his mother-in-law, Dolly Kendle; his sisters and brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by an infant brother, Marvin Wigfield, and his father-in-law, Louis Kendle.
The family will greet guests on Thursday, August 24, 2017 from 5-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Tom Hendershot will lead a service celebrating Dave’s life in Jerusalem Church on Friday at 10:30 AM. Burial in the Jerusalem Church Cemetery will follow. All are invited to join the family following services for a meal and fellowship in the church social hall.
During Dave’s illness, many friends and family have offered gifts and visits, of which the kindness and generosity can never be repaid and has meant so very much. His family would also like to thank the staff of Community Hospice for their compassion and care.
