David Lee Vitt, age 66, of New Philadelphia, died Saturday, February 14, 2015 in his residence following a brief illness.
A son of the late Frank and Polly (Akers) Vitt, Dave was born in Union Hospital at Dover on April 16, 1948.
He was a proud 1966 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and remained a lifelong supporter of the school’s athletic programs. Following graduation, Dave entered the United States Army and served as a cook until his discharge in 1968.
On May 16, 1970, Dave married the love of his life, the former Brenda Chek. Together the couple raised four children and celebrated nearly 45 years of marriage.
Professionally, Dave was employed by the former Reeves Steel at Dover and ultimately retired from Empire Detroit Steel following 33 years of service. Dave soon found a new profession as a custodian and maintenance worker for New Philadelphia City Schools. He loved his job with the school system and enjoyed being around staff and students alike.
A deep passion for sports was no secret to anyone who encountered Dave. His love for his alma mater was prevalent through his dedication to the N.P.H.S football program, having not missed a game, home or away, in 38 years. He was an avid supporter of Notre Dame sporting activities, and enjoyed a 30 plus year career as a little league and pony league baseball coach. Above all, Dave loved to watch his grandchildren as they ventured off in various activities and made a point to be present to each activity or game.
His family will miss his love for Elvis Presley and the opportunities he provided to share his passion through song with each of them during holiday events.
In addition to his wife, Dave leaves behind four children, Brian Vitt, Nick Vitt, Anthony Vitt all of New Philadelphia and Michelle (Scott) Bowersock of Midvale; four grandchildren, Gage Abel, Rayben Vitt, Bailey Vitt and Andrix Bowersock; his brother, Frank (Vicki) Vitt, Jr. and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Chek all of New Philadelphia as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Kennedy and his father-in-law, John Chek.
Dave’s family wishes to extend a most sincere thank you to Dr. Lori Kuehne and Staff for their compassionate care during his illness as well as heartfelt gratitude to the staff of New Philadelphia City Schools for their gifts of food, visits, and calls.
A memorial celebration of Dave’s life will take place on Saturday, February 21, 2015 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM in Ricardo’s Party Center, 115 Front Street SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663. In keeping with Dave’s wishes, cremation has taken place through the care of Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory.
