Master Carpenter, David L. Stein, 67, a longtime resident of Tuscarawas County departed on Friday, August 11, 2006 for the Kingdom of Heaven embraced in love and encircled by his family. He left his family and friends behind after a year long battle with cancer to supervise what family members believe “must be a massive construction project in heaven”.Born August 20, 1938 in his family’s summer kitchen in Bucks Township, David was the son of the late Clarence and Minnie (Lang) Stein. For as long as anyone can remember, he was in the construction business working for commercial and industrial companies such as Gibson & Grable, Towne Construction, Stein Construction and the company he retired from in 2000, R.G. Smith. He was well respected and considered to be a master carpenter. Of course his first “construction love” was helping his children with their various projects, from a garage for Denise & Chris to a home addition for Dorene & Tom, along with numerous decks, several other garages and roofs just to name a few.He was a Jack of all trades and Master of everything. If there was work to be done, there was no such thing as sleeping in on weekends. He was always the first to show up on any given project and you were always guaranteed to hear “Let’s go, we are burning daylight!” There was nothing that couldn’t be done unless “Davie said it couldn’t be done.” He took pride in everything he did and loved helping others.David’s second love was the outdoors. He was always waiting for that “next big buck to come through the ravine”. He enjoyed many hunting seasons at the long time family farm on Seibert Hill Road and at Wild Cat Hollow. Their hunting parties always included his late brother, Don, his nephew from Boston, Greg, his son, Joe and grandsons, Jon “Buck”, Kyle, Todd, David and Herbie along with close friends. Spring was always welcomed with trips to the woods with Dean and Jeff to go mushroom hunting. August was a month he always looked forward to, it meant a trip to the beautiful Rocky Mountains and the Garden of the Gods in Colorado where his daughter, Ginny, resides and until recently where his son Jeff had lived. Like all of us, there were a lot of things that was still on David’s “to do’ list that perhaps now, free from pain, he will be able to complete. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy L. (Kaylor) Stein, whom he met and fell in love with on March 17, 1954. They married on September 15, 1956 and anxiously waited their 50th wedding anniversary which they would have celebrated this year. Other surviving family members include six children, Virginia Gump of Denver, Colorado, Joe L. (Brenda) Stein of Canton, Jeffrey W. (Cindy) Stein of New Philadelphia, A. Dean Stein of Dover and twin daughters, Denise L. (Chris) Kerch and Dorene L. (Thomas) Boyd both of New Philadelphia; 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; six brothers, three sisters and many dear friends and neighbors who always felt welcomed in the Stein Home.He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and one sister.Family and friends may call on Monday, August 14, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating David’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 10 a.m. in Renner’s St. Paul United Church of Christ in Fiat, Bucks Township with Rev. Sharon Jacobson officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Renner’s St. Paul Church of Christ Cemetery, where as a young boy, he was a member of the church and then rejoined the church later in life. Those wishing to do so may send the family a personal condolence and sign the online guest registry by visiting the funeral home website.Memorial contributions may be made in David’s memory to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH 44622.
