David L. Korns, 55 of New Philadelphia, died suddenly on Monday, April 16, 2007 in Union Hospital at Dover.A son of the late Joseph and Helen (Van Pelt) Korns, Dave was born February 19, 1952 in Columbus, Ohio.Dave was a 1970 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Kent State University in 1975. He then completed his formal education at Mary Grove College in Detroit, Michigan. While attending Kent State University, Dave was a member of the 1972 football team that won the MAC Football Championship and earned a birth in the Tangerine Bowl.Dave was a school teacher for the last 32 years, 28 of which were at New Philadelphia. Most recently, he was a Physical Education Teacher at Welty Middle School. Throughout his time with the school district, Dave coached football, baseball and basketball.With his involvement in athletics, Dave shared a special bond with many athletes. What was even more special about him was the fact that it wasn’t necessary to be an athlete to be special in Dave’s eyes. All of his students were very important to him and at many times he went well out of his way to make a special connection.Dave was a family man as well. On June 30, 1984, in Broadway United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia, he married the love of his life, the former Sally Tucker. From this date on, Dave and Sally started their family together and reared three wonderful children, Rachael, Elizabeth and Tyler.Over the years, Dave’s family spent many special times together and have formed many special memories. His family will forever remember his special scrambled eggs, his not so great mechanical abilities and his love for Christmas. Most of all, he will be remembered by Sally as a loving husband who was her best friend, a wonderful father, brother and a man highly regarded by his extended family.Dave was a member of First Christian Church at New Philadelphia, a former member of Big Brothers and Big Sisters and a current member of T-4-C Booster Program.He will be sadly missed by his wife, Sally Korns; his children, Rachael who is attending Baldwin-Wallace College at Berea, Elizabeth, who is a senior at New Philadelphia High and Tyler who is a sophomore at New Philadelphia High; sisters, Rebecca Jergens and Sarah Korns, both of Shelby, Ohio, mother-in-law, Doris Tucker of New Philadelphia, sisters-in-law, Jane (Jim) Trosen of Northville, Michigan and Peg (Ron) Shrock of Walnut Creek, Ohio; brother-in-law, Jeff (Valerie) Tucker of New Philadelphia, nieces, Stephanie Tucker and Ashley Shrock; nephews, Josh (Leslie) Jergens, Patrick and Andrew Tucker and Luke Shrock, a great-niece, Mackenzie Jergens and a special pal to the family, Jamal Johnson.Dave was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Joseph Korns, two aunts, Mary Jane and Margaret Korns and his father-in-law, William Tucker.Family and friends may call on Thursday, April 19, 2007 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Dave’s life will be held on Friday, April 20, 2007 at 3 p.m. in First Christian Church at New Philadelphia with Pastor Jim Borton officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Dave’s honor to the Dave Korns Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o The Quaker Foundation, 343 Ray Avenue NW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
