David A. Lewis, well regarded for knowing his way around a golf course, died peacefully June 4, 2004, in his son’s home surrounded by his children. He lost his long and courageous battle with cancer at the age of 69. David was born in Cleveland, September 16, 1934, the only son of the late Wilbur A. Lewis and Dorothy A. Davis Lewis, who preceded her son in death by only two weeks. Mr. Lewis retired from Warner & Swasey in 1995 following a forty-two year welding career during which he had nearly perfect attendance. David played on the New Philadelphia High School 1950 undefeated football team and proudly participated in the championship ring presentation ceremony that took place in 2001.Following his high school graduation in 1953, he attended Kent State University. In 1954, he enlisted in the Army and served two years at Fort Meade in Maryland. Mr. Lewis earned the National Service Defense and Good Conduct Medals.Green Valley Golf Club was Mr. Lewis’ second home. David recorded seven holes-in-one during his golf career. Being with the “Green Valley Group” at the golf course brought him great pleasure.Survivors include three daughters, Kim A. (Ray) Sherrell of New Philadelphia, Lori A. Lewis and Jeffry White of Athens, O, and Ruth A. (Tom) Burton of Dover; two sons, Tod A. (Kathy) Lewis and D. Andrew Lewis, both of New Philadelphia; sisters, Carol (Jerry) Wampfler of New Philadelphia, Linda Laghetto of Dover, and Jean (Jim) Nieciak of Darien, IL. David was blessed with 17 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 4 nieces, 2 nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as many loyal friends.In addition to his parents, his first-born grandson, Drew Lewis White, precedes Mr. Lewis in death.At David’s request, there are no calling hours or services scheduled. Cremation will be conducted locally. A celebration of David’s life is being planned for later this summer.In gratitude for their warmth, care, and compassion, the Lewis family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 West Third Street, Dover, OH, 44622.
