Daniel Lee “Dan” Horn, 58, of Oldtown Valley, died unexpectedly at his farm on Thursday, March 15, 2012.
A son of Richard “Ray” Horn and the late Cleala (Schumacher) Horn, Dan was born November 28, 1953 in Union Hospital at Dover.
Dan graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1972 where he also took part in the vocational welding program.
He was a third generation farmer of the Simon and Ned Schumacher Farm in Goshen. He had a true passion for farming and served as a great steward of the land. Dan also enjoyed making things “bigger and better” and often fabricated many of the pieces of equipment used on the farm. He was also a tractor enthusiast and was fond of the White Tractor line and Oliver & Moline tractors until they were eventually phased out. After the phasing out of Oliver & Moline, Dan filled the void with John Deere.
Dan was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Oldtown Valley. He was also a member of the York Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau and was active in the Oldtown Boys 4-H club. He enjoyed hunting, especially coon hunting. However, his true pride and joy were his niece and his two nephews.
In addition to his father, Ray, Dan is survived by his sister, Brenda (Donald) Sibley of Strasburg; his brother, Jay (Pamela) Horn of New Philadelphia; a niece Melissa Sibley; two nephews, Eric and Dylan Sibley; an uncle, Glen (Bonnie Ann) Schumacher of Tuscarawas; two aunts, Doris Schumacher of New Philadelphia and Mary Pemberton of Colorado and many cousins and close friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his mother, a dear uncle and his mentor, Ned Schumacher and Ned’s first wife, Martha.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 19, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Dan’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Hugh Berry officiating. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service, a luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
Contributions may be made in Dan’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
