Dale Frank Lirgg, 88, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday evening, July 23, 2008, in the Hennis Care Center at Dover.A son of the late Frank and Rose Avon Lirgg, Dale was born May 22, 1920, at New Philadelphia.Dale retired in May 1985 after 24 years as an agent of the Equitable Life Insurance Company. Prior to that he had worked at the former Ladrach Paint Store and Montgomery Ward Store, both at New Philadelphia. A veteran of the United States Army during World War II, Dale served with the 86th Ordinance of General Patton’s 5th Army in Africa and Italy. He was a life member of the First United Church of Christ, at New Philadelphia and a life member of the New Philadelphia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1445.Dale liked sports. He played high school basketball and played on local independent baseball and softball teams, and for many years coached boy’s baseball teams. He enjoyed a good game of cards and playing golf, while able, and playing pool; especially with his grandsons.He enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife. Together they toured almost all of the 48 continental United States in visits to family and friends and attending reunions with those he served alongside during World War II. Dale was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle and will be greatly missed. Dale is survived by his wife, Dorothy A. Hahn Lirgg, whom he married May 22, 1948; a son, Jeffrey R. (Ann) Lirgg, of Louisville, O.; a daughter, Cathy D. Lirgg, of Fayettville, Arkansas; four grandsons, Jason, Jeremy and Joseph Lirgg, of Louisville, O and Scott Lirgg, of Fayetteville, Arkansas; a great grandson Devin Lirgg, of Louisville, O.; a half-brother, Glen Lirgg, of Vero Beach, Fl.; a sister-in-law, Eileen Hahn, of Dover. Five nieces and five nephews complete the family. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Eckert.Friends are invited to call Sunday, July 27, 2008, from 1 â?? 3 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. Jeffrey Gerber and Associate Pastor Jill Lovett will conduct a funeral service on Monday at 10AM in the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia. Burial will follow in the West Lawn Cemetery at Baltic, where the New Philadelphia Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will perform military honors. A reception will follow the committal in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.
