Dale F. Sherer

April 30, 1933 — December 17, 2012

Dale Franklin Sherer, age 79, of New Philadelphia, died Monday, December 17, 2012 under the care of Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.

A son of the late Orie L. and Metha J. (Dury) Sherer, Dale was born at Algansee, Michigan on April 30, 1933.

As a younger child, Dale’s family relocated to the Tuscarawas Valley and he ultimately graduated from Dover High School. Not long after graduation, Dale was called to serve his country as a member of the United States Army. He entered into service on May 26, 1953 and was assigned to the 24th Reconnaissance Company as a Rifle Squad Leader.
He was honorably discharged from active duty at the rank of Technical Sergeant on April 27, 1955.

Upon returning home, Dale began working for Spring Industries at Brightwood and soon joined the former Warner & Swasey at New Philadelphia which later became the Gradall Company and retired following 29 years of service as a boom assemblyman.

He was an avid fisherman and Boston Red Sox fan. Dale also used many of his work skills to invent small gadgets that made life easier and more convenient. He also loved working in his vegetable garden and flower gardens until his health would no longer allow him to do so. Above all, Dale enjoyed the company of his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved looking after them when they were younger and later, made it a priority to attend nearly every event in which they were involved.

He will be missed by his family, a son, Steven D. (Mary Ellen) Sherer of New Philadelphia; two daughters, Dianne (Steve) Farwick of Canton, Christine (John) Milburn of Beach City; and a step-son, Howard (Karen) Poorman of New Philadelphia.

Nine grandchildren, Steven, Alison, Steven, Angela, John, Richelle, Zachary, Carly and Hannah; four great-grandchildren, Brianna, John, Gabriella, and Zoey as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.

In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, whom he married on May 25, 1977 and celebrated 15 years of marriage prior to her death on August 25, 1992; two brothers, Othal and Floyd and a sister, Norma.

The family will greet guests on Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Rev. Hugh B. Berry will lead a service celebrating Dale’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Friday, December 21, 2012 at 1:30 PM. Burial, with military honors performed by the honor guard team of the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the New Philadelphia VFW, will follow in the Dover Burial Park.

Following services, all are invited to share in a meal and fellowship in the Hospitality Room of the Dover Geib Center, adjacent to the Dover Burial Park.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
