Clyde W. Penrod, age 98, of New Philadelphia died Thursday, January 24, 2019, in the New Dawn Retirement Center at Dover.
Clyde was born in Midvale, Ohio on February 6, 1920, a son of the late Charles W. Penrod Sr. and Margaret Miles Penrod.
He was a 1938 graduate of Midvale High School and was a World War II Army Veteran. During the war, he served as an Army Master Sargent (Chief Radioman). He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle for the Remagen Bridge, the invasion and occupation of Germany, and was awarded was a Bronze Star.
Clyde is a former employee of Robinson Clay Products Company (Royal), Warner and Swayze, and Joy Manufacturing at New Philadelphia from which he retired. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and card player and a lifetime member of the New Philadelphia Elks BPOE #510.
He is survived by his sister Linda Penrod Varney of Readfield, Maine; a step-son Ronald Golder (Sherry Wickliff) of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Arlene Zontini Tinker of Dallas Georgia; a brother in law Arnold Zontini Jr. of Fairfield Kentucky, and many nieces, nephews, their families, and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Clyde was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Lilian Zontini Penrod whom he married on May 31, 1952; an infant brother, Ralph Penrod; a sister, Minnie Rowan, and a brother, Charles W. “Fritz” Penrod, Jr.
The family will receive guests on Monday, January, 28, 2019, from 1-2 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory where Fr. Jeff Coning will lead a service in the funeral home’s chapel at 2 PM. Military honors will follow and burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
The family would like to thank New Dawn Retirement Center and its caregivers. In addition, thank you to his friend Harvey Byers for the years of golfing and friendship.
