Clarence Philip “Putt” Heldt Jr, 87, of New Philadelphia, died Saturday, February 18, 2012 in Union Hospital at Dover following a period of declining health.
A son of the late Clarence Philip Heldt Sr. and the late Inez (Pissocra) Heldt, Putt was born June 16, 1924 at Dover, Ohio.
Putt graduated from Tuscarawas-Warwick High School in 1942. Then on March 15, 1943, he enlisted with the United States Army and served during World War II as a medic. During his time in the service, Putt was stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He then received his honorable discharge on May 3, 1946.
On December 15, 1943, Putt married the love of his life, the former Kathryn Amelia Johnson in Sharon Moravian Church at Tuscarawas. The couple raised four daughters, Kathy, Lisa, Heidi and Jennifer.
He was the longtime owner and operator of Modern Parts Company at Cadiz. Putt was an active member of Sharon Moravian Church where he sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher and held various board positions over the years. He was also a member of the Tuscarawas V.F.W. and Navarre V.F.W. In his spare time, Putt enjoyed making wine and having his favorite meal, “a pie and a fork”.
Surviving is his wife of 68 years, Kathryn Heldt; his daughters, Kathy (Dennis) Kopp of New Philadelphia, Lisa McCarthy of Key West , Florida, Heidi (Dr. Robert) Briggs of New Philadelphia and Jennifer (Paul) Feickert of Suttons Bay, Michigan; grandchildren, Justin (Jennifer) Kopp, Heather (Luke) Dodge, Kathryn, Erin, Patrick and Blair McCarthy, Rebecka (Steve) Santangelo, April (Keith) Pittis and Joshua Feickert; a great grandson, Brandon Pittis and a great granddaughter who is to arrive in the next few weeks and numerous nieces and nephews
Putt was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Olivia Pearl Feickert and a brother, Herbert Dean Heldt.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Putt’s life will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 11 a.m. in Sharon Moravian Church at Tuscarawas with Rev. Dennis Rohn and Rev. Darrell Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery. Following the committal service, a luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall at the church.
