Clara Mae Aldergate Hinig, age 93, of New Philadelphia, died early Sunday, October 30, 2016 in Union Hospital at Dover, following a brief illness.
Clara was born January 19, 1923 in Midvale, Ohio. She was a daughter of Irene and Joseph Aldergate. Clara attended Immaculate Conception for grades 1 through 8 and then attended Dennison High School where she graduated in 1941. Clara continued her studies at Mt. Carmel College of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio where she graduated in 1944. She used her Nursing Degree working at Twin City and Union Hospitals and at the New Philadelphia Health Department. In 1946, Clara married her best friend, William E. Hinig. They celebrated a wonderful 58 years of marriage until his death in 2004.
Clara was a member of Sacred Heart Church in New Philadelphia. Clara was an artist who insisted on never buying anything she could make herself. She was accomplished in Oil, Acrylic and Water Colors and created beautiful painting on chinaware, slate, canvas and even eggs. Clara was a seamstress and created prom dresses and coats and memory bears for loved ones. She believed that working with her craft was good therapy throughout her life. She would often say she was a jack of all trades, a master at none. But those who saw her work knew she was a master of most!
She was a strong and tough woman with a generous heart, a pioneer who got on a train and left home to attend college and was the wife of a man who served the public and was gone many days working in Columbus as a State Legislator. During those days, she raised three children, worked as a nurse and still had time to do a little art. Clara took great care of her family, was a terrific Mom and loved her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
Clara leaves behind her children, Judy Gray (Greg Kavinsky) of Medina, Ohio, Rick Hinig (Bethann) of New Philadelphia and Jill Hinig Skapin (Jeff Skapin) of Stow, Ohio; grandchildren, Amy Reichelt (Jimmy), Ryan Gray (Michelle), Sarah Skapin Hegnauer (John), Annie Skapin Schauffler, Bronson Witting (Sarah) and Brock Witting (Sarah); great grandchildren, Madison and Alex Covert, Will and Allison Gray, Clara and Owen Schauffler, John Henry Hegnauer IV, Henry and Marshall Witting; and her brother, Jack Aldergate (Bev) and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Clara was preceeded in death by brothers, Louie and John Aldergate and a sister, Dawna Heston.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Jeff Coning in Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 10:30 AM. A meal and fellowship will immediately follow in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.
