Christine Elizabeth Whitcomb, age 83, of New Philadelphia, and formerly of Morrisville, Vermont, died peacefully early Easter Sunday morning, April 16, 2006 in Country Club Retirement Center following an extended illness related to Alzheimer’s disease. Born at Burlington, Vermont, on December 8, 1922, Christine was a daughter of the late Asa and Zana Sterling Reynolds. Christine was an active lady who enjoyed working with her hands on various craft related projects from sewing and needlework to piecing quilts and working in her abundant flower and vegetable gardens. She fancied her cats, and especially her doll collection. On February 28, 1940, she married Wayne Willard Whitcomb. The two observed their sixty-sixth wedding anniversary together six weeks ago. Christine was a homemaker and reared six children before going to work as a nurse in the Waterbury State Hospital in Vermont. She and her husband spent summers in Vermont, and winters in Florida until they settled in Ohio in the early 1990’s. In addition to her husband, who resides in Country Club Retirement Center at Dover, Ohio, Christine is survived by two sons; Leon and wife Rhoda Bedell Whitcomb of Morrisville, Vermont, and Mason Whitcomb and Sharon Hersey of Waterbury Center, Vermont, and three daughters; Lorraine Carvalho of Dover, Ohio, Shirley and husband David Bridges of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Arlene and husband John Tramell of Cottondale, Florida.Mrs. Whitcomb will be sadly missed by ten grandchildren; Julie McCrary of Georgia, Leon Whitcomb Jr. of Tennessee, Michele and Shawn Whitcomb of Vermont, Kenneth and Kevin Carvalho of Washington, Brian, Dave and Dan Bridges, all of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Denise Collette of Florida. One sister, Rachel Cubit of Waterbury, Vermont and a sister-in-law, Florence Reynolds of Williston, Vermont complete the family. In addition to her parents, an infant son, Roger Whitcomb, and son Wayne Whitcomb Jr, as well as a grandson Roger Whitcomb, a brother, Robert Reynolds and brother-in-law, Percy Cubit, precede Mrs. Whitcomb in death. There are no calling hours or services scheduled at this time. Cremation will be conducted through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A family graveside service will be held at a later date in Fairmount Cemetery at Wolcott, Vermont. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
