Chester Leroy Clum, age 90, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully Saturday morning, November 24, 2007, following a brief illness in Union Hospital at Dover, with his loving family at his side. Born at Strasburg, March 14, 1917, he was the oldest of four sons born to the late William & Edna Miller Clum whose homestead was in the Oldtown Valley. He grew with brothers Howard and Clarence Clum, who both now reside at New Philadelphia, and the late Arthur Clum.In the late 1930’s Chester met the former Mary Elizabeth VanDyke. The couple wed November 16, 1940, and just last week observed their 67th wedding anniversary. Chester retired from the former Goshen Dairy Company where he had worked as a mechanic for nearly two decades. He and Mary were familiar faces in area flea markets, especially at Garver Brothers Store at Strasburg where they maintained a sales area. When asked about his favorite work over the years, Chester recalled his years as the east end bus driver, where he delighted in the stories told by youngsters on the bus. Mr. Clum was also a mechanic for several years at the former Edwards Trucking and Motor Freight companies. Until recently, Chester enjoyed delivering cars to and from auction for local dealers. He leaves behind a family that, in addition to his wife, includes a son, Jerry and his wife Carol Clum of New Philadelphia; a daughter, Janet Clum also of New Philadelphia, and daughter Barbara and her husband Kevin Redinger of Dublin, Ohio.Eight grandchildren, Doug (partner Terry) Clum of Dover, Greg Clum of New Philadelphia, Shelly (husband Mike) Farrar of Atlanta, Georgia, Mitchell (wife Cindy) Clum of Marietta, Ohio, Kelly Creager of New Philadelphia, Dane (wife Katie) Redinger of Dublin, Mica and Mac Redinger, also of Dublin. Great grandchildren include Carissa Gay, Tynan Clum, Michael Farrar, Christian Farrar, Aaron Vermule, Steve Clum, and Taylor Clum, Zak Blake, James Blake, and Andrew Creager. Many nieces and nephews complete the family. The family will receive guests Monday, November 26, from 2-4 and from 6-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia.
