Charles W. Porter, 87, of Dover passed away in Schoenbrunn Healthcare Center at New Philadelphia on July 4, 2015, following a period of declining health.
Born in Newport, Ohio on August 16, 1927, Chuck was the son of the late Galen Shafer and Dorothy May (Turney) Porter of Riverside Park.
After completing his formal education, he served his country in the United States Army, being discharged in 1947 as a Corporal.
On July 23, 1949, Chuck married his lifelong companion and friend, the former Joanne Swisshelm, in Russell, Kentucky. Together, they raised three sons, Glenn, Scott, and Stephen and enjoyed more than 20 years of wintering in Florida.
Chuck’s professional career as a heavy equipment operator spanned more than 29 years with Beaver Excavating Co. in Canton. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local #18.
Other memberships included the Dover Moose and Eagles, and a lifetime membership with the New Philadelphia VFW #1445.
In addition to his wife, Joanne, Chuck is survived by his children, Glenn Porter of Dover, Scott (Jackie) Porter of New Philadelphia, and Stephen (Edie) Porter of Sorrento, Florida; and his grandchildren, Ryan and Drew Porter, Sarah (Eric) Walters, and Wes, Brandon, and Adam Porter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, Glenn Porter, Nancy Kinsey, and Ralph Porter; and his beloved grandson, Shane Michael Porter in 2014.
Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Cremation will be cared for through Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory and private inurnment will be held at a later date in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover.
