Charles “Chuck” Laporte, age 71, of New Philadelphia died early Friday morning, November 11, 2011 in Union Hospital at Dover following a period of declining health.Born November 1, 1940 in Tippecanoe, Ohio he was the son of the late Howard and Ruth (Garabrandt) Laporte. He retired from the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s department, where he was still active in the reserves until recently due to his health. He formally worked for Associated Grocers and the former Joy Manufacturing. He served in the Marine Corp from 1959 through 1963, stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and Port Lyodia, South Africa. He served on board the Plymouth Rock off the shores of Cuba during the Cuban Blockade. He’s a member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Philadelphia.A wonderful and loving husband, father, and grandfather, Chuck will be sadly missed by his wife of 49 ½ years, Pat (Eberhart) Laporte whom he married on an Easter evening April 22, 1962. Chuck and Pat together raised their only child, Jennifer (Ray) Sigler, Jr. of New Philadelphia which was a gift of love to them. Two other blessings in Chuck’s life are his two grandchildren, Sami and Dylan Sigler of New Philadelphia.Also surviving are two brothers, James (Verna) Laporte and Robert (Alice) Laporte of Tippecanoe; brother-in-law, Alfred Cannon of Tuscarawas; his mother-in-law, Esther Eberhart of Cadiz; an aunt, Lucille Garabrandt of New Philadelphia; and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister June Cannon and a brother, Howard “Howdy” Laporte.Visitation will be held Monday, November 14, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A service celebrating Chuck’s life will be held in the funeral home’s chapel on Tuesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. with The Rev. Hugh B. Berry officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.Friends are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home, where a meal will be shared following the committal service.Memorial contributions in Chuck’s name may be directed to Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Gift Processing Administrator, 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA 22172.
