Charles Minor of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, February 11, 2012, in New Dawn Health Care Center at Dover, one week after celebrating his 96th birthday.
Born at Tuscarawas, February 4, 1916, he was a son of the late Jack and Regina “Nellie” Marie Rommela Minor.
A resident of Uhrichsville for most of his life, and best known as “Poppie” by his family, he met and fell in love with the former Beulah Marie Staneart. The couple wed June 25, 1937, and observed their fifty-first anniversary prior to her death July 21, 1988.
Charlie enjoyed keeping busy all the days of his life. Early on, he operated the former Minor Market on Uhrichsville’s west end, which was succeeded by the Maurer family in the early 1950’s. He also operated a mink farm, at its height of operation, tending to more than a thousand mink daily. His also worked as a coal miner and machinist before retiring from the former United States Concrete of Uhrichsville.
He was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia, was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church and enjoyed his membership with the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. For many years, Charlie enjoyed the fellowship of the former Roswell Senior Citizens Group. He’ll be remembered by his family for his love of square dancing, bowling, camping, playing bingo and just generally tinkering around the house and garage. Charlie also enjoyed golfing, and retrieving lost golf balls, and operating a HAMM radio.
Survivors include his daughter Judy Miller of New Philadelphia and his son, Charles “Danny” (wife, Sherrie) Minor of Weirton, West Virginia.
He’ll be sadly missed by his grandchildren; Cindy (husband, Todd) Colucy and Scott (wife, Tricia) Miller both of New Philadelphia, Wayne (wife, Chris) Minor of High Point, North Carolina, and Michelan (husband, Mark) Valentine of Weirton, West Virginia.
Charlie’s great-grandchildren Chaz and Katie Colucy, Madison and Derrek Miller, Brittany Minor, Chandler Stone, and Michael and Matthew Valentine also survive.
Two sisters, JoAnn Johnson of Bradington, Florida, and Emma Kail of Scio, O as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
In addition to his parents and wife, Charlie is preceded in death by his brothers Richard and Pete Minor, and his son-in-law, Lloyd Miller.
Friends are invited to call Monday, January 13, from 4 – 7 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where Pastor Bill Sowers will lead Mr. Minor’s funeral service Tuesday morning at 10:30 in the funeral home’s chapel.
Burial alongside his wife will follow in the Gnadenhutten-Clay Union Cemetery.
Following the committal service, family and friends will gather for a reception in the fellowship hall at Broadway United Methodist Church.
