Charles “Chuck” Beatty passed away peacefully at Union Hospital in Dover on Saturday, November 27, 2004, just a few hours before his 88th birthday.Charles was born in Dennison, OH on November 28, 1916, to the late Horace and Theodocia (Phillips) Beatty, as their youngest child. Chuck graduated from New Philadelphia High School in l934, and served in Hawaii with the United States Navy as a motor machinist mate. He was a recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal and was honorably discharged in 1946.A former employee of the Marsh Lumber Company, he retired as a machine operator from Hercules White Motors of Canton. In his younger years, he played softball and roller skated at Tuscora Park. After retirement, he enjoyed working on bicycles and trikes for his grandchildren and repairing family members’ cars. He was a big fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns, was a member of the Golden Circle Sunday School Group, and watched TV ministries of Billy Graham and Robert Schuller.He enjoyed golfing, but was an avid bowler. He was inducted into the Tuscarawas County Bowlers Hall of Fame, won many tournaments, served as an officer of the leagues, and bowled on the Pepsi Cola Team as well as others.Chuck especially enjoyed telling a good story or joke. His way of showing you he liked you was by giving you a nickname, a wink, or a wry smile. During his last few years, he was able to remain in his home with the assistance of family, Sandy from All-American Health Care, Meals on Wheels, and the expert care of Dr. Jennifer Ney, to all of whom he was truly grateful.Chuck will be missed by his sons, Charles and Ronald Beatty of Oregon and Richard (Bev) Ferris of New Philadelphia; daughters, Nedra (Bill) Welfley and Charlyn (Kim) Menapace, all of New Philadelphia; eight local grandchildren, Bill, Jim, John, and Brian Welfley, Rick and Sandy Ferris, and Jason and Carrie Menapace; and twenty great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Edna (Ferris) Beatty; his brothers, Harry, Leonard “Peep,” and Russell; and his sister, Charlottte. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Hugh B. Berry on Thursday, December 2, 2004, at 4:30 p.m. in the Geib Chapel. A reception in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, will follow the service.Cremation will be conducted at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory.The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the charity or organization of the donor’s choice or to the Quaker Foundation Scholarship Program, c/o New Philadelphia City Schools, 343 Ray Avenue NW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
