Charles Gordon ”gordy” Singhaus

Charles Gordon, “Gordy” Singhaus, age 86, of Dover, died Monday, November 7, 2011, in Union Hospital at Dover.A son of the late Charles Harry and Martha Gazelle Holmes Singhaus, Gordy, as he was known to family and friends, was born at Twin City Hospital at Dennison on June 21, 1925.Gordy was a 1943 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and enlisted into the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre aboard Destroyer Escort 416. While aboard ship, Gordy saw the flag over Iwo Jima being raised as the United States battled for control of the island. Upon his discharge, in 1946, Gordy attended Ohio University at Athens, Ohio. He studied economics and business and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1950. On August 31, 1949, while attending college, he met and married a young lady named Juliette Beiner. The couple reared two children and shared in 26 years of marriage prior to Juliette’s passing in 1985. In October of 1999, Gordy was wed to Marlene Kay Nagle Harris. Throughout the years, Gordy held a number of positions with area firms. As a young man, in high school, Gordon worked at the Union Lumber Yard at New Philadelphia. Upon college graduation, he took a position at the Tuscarawas Savings and Loan where he became the assistant Secretary-Treasurer. In 1956, Gordy became employed by Deardorff Hardware at Dover where he later became the company’s owner.For many years, Gordy was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church at New Philadelphia where he was an ordained elder, a Master Mason with the New Philadelphia Lodge F&AM 177, an active member of the Dover Kiwanis, and had previously served as the club’s president. Additionally, Gordy was a member of the Dover Retail Merchant Organization, the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the New Philadelphia VFW, the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge BPOE 510, and the American Legion.In addition to his wife, Gordy is survived by his two children, Elizabeth (Gary) Robinson of Evansville, Indiana and Bill (fiancée, Angela Zumbar) Singhaus of Atwood Lake; Marlene’s children, Leslie Vasser of Tiffin, Ohio and Steve (Cathy) Harris of Navarre; and a brother, Robert (Ruth) Singhaus of Lima, Ohio.Other survivors include four grandchildren, Neil (Kate) Robinson, Donovan (Christina) Robinson, Patrick Robinson, and David Singhaus; fourstep-grandchildren, Erin Vasser, Emilie Vasser, Elizabeth Wiser and Ryan Harris. In addition, Payton and Parker Zumbar are children who were special to Gordy. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 10, 2011, from 5:00 Â? 7:00 PM with Masonic services to be held at 6:45 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and again one hour prior to services on Friday, November 11, 2011 from 10-11 AM in the First Presbyterian Church at New Philadelphia. Reverend Mark Unrue will lead a funeral service celebrating Gordy’s life on Friday at 11 AM in the church sanctuary. A meal and fellowship in the church social hall will immediately follow the service. The family suggests memorial contributions in Gordy’s name be directed to the Tuscarawas County Humane Socitey, 6895 Dover Zoar Rd NE, Dover, Ohio 44622 or to the Tuscarawas Philharmonic PO Box 406, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
