Charles Frederick Mackey, 68, of New Philadelphia, died Monday September 1, 2008 with his children by his side, in his residence, following a courageous battle with cancerA son of the late John C. and Mary Turson Mackey (Gibbs), Charles was born in the family residence at New Philadelphia on August 13, 1940 and attended New Philadelphia Schools. He had been employed by Republic Steel, at Massillon.Charles was a member of Sacred Heart Church, and volunteered as a swim instructor for the Red Cross. In 2007 he was honored as the volunteer of the year for the local chapter of the Red Cross. He will also be remembered for his enthusiastic approach to fitness, his numerous participation in 5 kilometer runs and his daily workout sessions at New Philadelphia’s Super Fitness. He also had a life long interest in collecting automobiles and is known for his extensive car collection.Charles was a devoted father to his children, Mark Mackey, of Dover and Dana Mackey, of New York City, New York; he is also survived by his brothers and sisters, David (Gloria) Mackey, of New Philadelphia, Robert (Linda) Mackey, of Atwood, Peg (James) Maney, of Dellroy, Chip (Cheryl) Mackey, of New Philadelphia, Mike Mackey, of Dellroy and Patricia (Jim) Touse, of Little Rock, AK; and his beloved miniature dachshund, Molly.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Marilyn and his brother Richard.Visitaton will be held Thursday, September 4, 2008, from 6:00 p.m till 8:00 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory of New Philadelphia and on Friday from 10:00 a.m till 11:00 a.m. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home’s chapel with Msgr. George Schlegel officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park.
