Charles E. “Sonny” Lahmers

December 31, 1936 — April 10, 2022

Charles E. “Sonny” Lahmers, age 85 of Newcomerstown, died Sunday, April 10, 2022, while in the care of Community Hospice’s Truman House in New Philadelphia.

Born on December 31, 1936, in Newcomerstown, Ohio. Sonny was the son of the late Walter and Emmaline Cronebaugh Lahmers.

He married the former Dorothy Hawk on May 24, 1958, and together the couple raised four children. Sonny owned and operated their farm for more than 50 years raising both hogs and cattle while also growing corn and hay. Later in life, Sonny started and independently ran his own heavy equipment operation, Sonny’s Excavating.

He was a longtime member of the Stone Creek Rotary, sat on the Tuscarawas Soil and Water Board, and was a Trustee for the Frontier Power Company Board for many years. Sonny was an active member in 4-H and served several years as an advisor. He was a founding member of the Tuscarawas County Pork Producers and was instrumental in the formation of the Pork Producer’s food trailer at the Tuscarawas County Fair.

Sonny’s children remember how he often took Sunday evenings off for relaxation time and spent many of those evenings fishing together. Sonny loved the opportunities he had to travel with the Frontier Power Company Board and enjoyed various other trips the couple made with their friends. Later in life, Sonny enjoyed sitting by his fireplace watching RFDTV.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy, their children Jane (Steve) Grimm of Dover, Tom (Marcia) Lahmers of Ashland, Mike Lahmers of Port Washington, and Susan (companion Adam Bales) Lahmers of Mount Vernon; 10 grandchildren, Mitchell Grimm, Daniel Grimm, Christy (Joel) Hulse, Michele Lahmers, Matthew (Heather) Lahmers, Madison Lahmers, Jacob Kennedy, Hannah Kennedy, Abigail Kennedy, and Ayden Kennedy; great-grandchildren, Chloe and Theresa Grimm, Grace, Wade, and Weston Hulse, Jase and Nash Lahmers, Ava Lahmers, and Dylan Steck.

Completing the family are his siblings, Bob (Geneva) Lahmers, Harold (Judy) Lahmers, Jerry (Rita) Lahmers, Patty (Richard) Arth, and Jennifer (Cliff) Brown, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by a grandson, Drew Lahmers.
